Meet Sunny D!
This handsome guy has lived quite the life. After spending years outdoors navigating the rough-and-tumble tomcat lifestyle, Sunny D tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), likely from fighting with other unneutered male cats while surviving outside. But don’t let those three little letters scare you! FIV is not a death sentence, and cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives with proper care and regular veterinary checkups.
FIV is most commonly spread through deep bite wounds, which is why it’s so often seen in former outdoor tomcats like Sunny D. It is not spread through casual contact like sharing food bowls, grooming, cuddling, or simply living together peacefully. With a safe indoor lifestyle, good nutrition, and routine medical care, many FIV+ cats live just as long as any other cat.
And honestly? Sunny D seems pretty ready to leave his street-fighting days behind him. Thanks to a kind human, he’s discovered how wonderful indoor life can be – cozy beds, soft blankets, regular meals, and humans who adore him. These days, he enjoys lounging beside his people, soaking up affection, and embracing his retirement from the “parking lot alley cat” era. Underneath his rugged exterior is a calm, gentle, and quietly affectionate boy. He may take a little time to warm up at first (he likes to make sure you pass the vibe check), but once you’ve earned his trust, he’s incredibly loyal and loving. Expect soft cuddles, steady companionship, and a cat who simply enjoys being near his people.
Sunny D is playful, sweet, and wonderfully easygoing at home. He’s not overly demanding, not dramatic, and not picky — just a solid, laid-back companion who appreciates the simple things in life, like a sunny window, a comfy nap spot, and a good head scratch. He’s come such a long way from his tougher days outside. Once a scrappy survivor, now a polite house guest who uses his litter box like a champ and has learned that love and safety can actually be trusted. He would likely do best as the only cat or with slow, careful introductions, as he can still be unsure around other cats at times.
Sunny D’s story is proof that rough beginnings don’t define a cat’s future. Sometimes the toughest old tomcats turn out to be the gentlest souls once they finally get the chance to feel safe.
